Ansaldo Energia SpA – AEN
Ansaldo Energia (AEN) is Italy’s largest supplier, installer and service provider for power generation plants and components and one of the world’s leading players in the sector. It is a full-cycle, integrated operator, with the capabilities to build turnkey power plants on green field sites using its own technology and its own independent design, production, construction, commissioning and service resources. AEN is structured around its core business activities of plants, components (gas turbines, steam turbines and generators), service work and nuclear activities through subsidiary company Ansaldo Nucleare. In particular Ansaldo Energia Group produces a comprehensive portfolio of heavy-duty gas turbines for power generation applications, offering customers the ability to operate their open or combined cycle plants at maximum performance levels and with the best possible results in terms of output, reliability, efficiency, emission levels and costs.
The new position in the gas turbines market was gained by AEN closing the operation with General Electric to acquire part of Alstom’s gas turbine business on February 2016. In fact, Ansaldo Energia Group enlarged its competences and increased its professional skills as it has been joined by over 800 associates from Ansaldo Energia Switzerland (formerly Alstom OEM) in Baden and from its subsidiary company Power System Manufacturing in Jupiter (Florida). Ansaldo Energia Group currently employs over 4,500 people
In particular for the power plant sector, AEN supplies Turn-key plants for thermal and combined or open cycle plants from plant design, environmental impact analysis, design and construction processes, commissioning, service.
Role in the project
AEN role in the project will be to:
- support the definition of the PHCC layout requirements starting from their database and the results of Industrial simulation tools (e.g. GateCycle or Thermoflow)
- adopt the models to estimate the operation flexibility enhancements of PHCC power plants configurations (WP1)
- contribute to the definition of requirements for PHCC replication and scaling up (WP6)
Mrs. Carla Mao, graduated in Physics at the University of Genoa (1985). After a first experience at the National Institute for Nuclear Physics (INFN), she joined Ansaldo SpA – R&D Unit, in January 1986 that merged with Ansaldo Energia SpA in June 2009: she developed skills in the field of high temperature advanced materials and technologies for components to be applied in energy conversion systems. In over 31 years’ work in Ansaldo, she acquired experience in management of Power Generation projects many of which totally or partially funded at European and National Level. In particular, she was the Ansaldo manager in charge for more than 15 European funded projects and the Consortium Co-ordinator of some of them (from 1st to 7th Framework Programme for Research and Technological Development i.e. Brite, Brite Euram, Joule, Human Capital & Mobility etc.).
Mr. Stefano Piola: he graduated in 2008 at the Politecnico di Milano with a Master’s Degree in Aeronautical Engineering. Since 2009 he has been working in Ansaldo Energia R&D department, currently as Gas Turbine performance and thermodynamic cycle engineer. He has been involved in gas turbine cycle design and system integration, GT performance test data analysis, as well as numerical tools development. Gas turbine cycle and performance technical coordinator for AE gas turbine development projects. Gas turbine cycle and performance group leader in a Post-F class gas turbine joint development program. Project engineer for the “Axial Compressor Degradation Effects on Heavy Duty Gas Turbines Overall Performances” project. Minimum Environmental Load Reduction in Heavy Duty Gas Turbines by Bleeding Lines.
Mr. Roberto Canepa, PhD: He received a PhD in Fluid Machinery Engineering. He is currently performance engineer at Ansaldo Energia R&D department. He is involved in gas turbine performance analysis, numerical tools development and post-F class gas turbine conceptual and basic design.
