Polski Koncern Naftowy ORLEN SA – ORLEN

PKN ORLEN is a modern player on the fuel and power market, the largest company in Central and Eastern Europe, and the only Polish company listed among the prestigious Fortune 500.

In line with strategy PKN ORLEN is aiming at building leading position in the region around upstream, downstream, and retail activities. ORLEN Group’s operate six refineries and the region's largest network of nearly 2,700 modern service stations located in Poland, the Czech Republic, Germany and Lithuania.

PKN ORLEN holds nine licences for oil and gas exploration throughout the country. One of PKN ORLEN priorities is to explore for and extract natural gas from unconventional sources in Poland. Purchase of Canadian oil and gas companies, TriOil, Birchill Exploration, and in October 2015 Kicking Horse Energy and American FX Energy turned PKN ORLEN into global company, with own resorces at the level of 88 million boe 2P.

PKN ORLEN is also a leading producer of petrochemicals, and his products are used as basic feedstocks by a large number of chemical companies. As part of development of power activities, ORLEN Group’s have signed a contract with a consortium of Siemens AG and Siemens Sp. z o.o. for the turnkey delivery of a new 596 MWe CCGT unit in Płock and a comprehensive O&M contract for the unit’s key equipment. Along with completion of the similar project in Włocławek, in three years, the capacity of ORLEN Group’s cogeneration assets will come close to 1.5 GWe.

Role in the project

ORLEN will be involved in the project as potential end-user of the PHCC layout. Additionally, ORLEN will take part in the following:

  • analysis of replicability of the concept both at economical (Business model) and technical level to investigate PHCC compliancy with Electrical National grid, analysing grid and market regulations at the local market
  • defining the main expectations of the industry and potential users of the project results i.e. heat pump cooperating with CCGT

Members

Mrs. Katarzyna Sobotka-Demianowska: she is Head for Energy Innovation at PKN ORLEN, the largest company in CEE region, where she is responsible of imitation and execution of R&D&I projects. Previously she was energy coordinator at National Contact Point for the Research Programmes of the EU at Institute of Fundamental Technological Research and she was technology scouter at KIC InnoEnergy. She has been involved in the following European projects: FP7 Streamer and Einstein, and IEE Stratego.

She holds a master degree in Environmental Engineering from Warsaw University of Technology and a master degree in Renewable Energy Science from RES - the School for Renewable Energy Science in Iceland. She has been a scholar of several scientific institutions dealing with renewable energy sources and environmental protection from technical, economic to political aspects in Europe and the United States, including: the German Biomass Research Center in Leipzig, and the Connecticut Global Fuel Cell Center at the University of Connecticut, USA. A winner of international awards, including the International Partnership for Hydrogen Economy and the German Federal Environment Foundation - DBU. Katarzyna is a laurate of TOP500 Innovators Science - Management – Commercialization Program from Haas School of Business, University of California Berkeley, USA.

Mr. Radosław Rolf: he is a graduate of Warsaw University of Technology – Faculty of Power and Aeronautical Engineering. He is working for PKN ORLEN since 2015 – involved in new, innovative projects preparation in the Energy segment in the capital group.
