Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Systems Europe GmbH – MHPSE

Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Systems Europe GmbH (MHPSE), a subsidiary of globally operating Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Systems Ltd., designs and constructs thermal power plants. The plant constructor also supplies key components such as utility steam generators, environmental engineering equipment, turbines and pulverizers. Including subsidiaries, approx. 1,700 staff is on the company's payroll (as of November 2015). Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Systems Europe GmbH is the successor to Hitachi Power Europe GmbH. MHPSE has been provided with all the relevant material and immaterial legally protected interests (e.g. patents, licenses, references).

As a market and technology leader - in utility steam generators, for instance – MHPSE relies on modern, ecologically sound and economic plants. In this way, the company - with its head offices in Duisburg - plays a prime role in securing the supply of electricity on the markets in question.

As an energy plant constructor, Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Systems Europe benefits both from the growing demand for electricity and the boom in power plant construction in Eastern Europe, Africa, India and Russia. MHPSE is playing a major role in the modernization of the Eastern European power generation system.

As of 1 January 2016 subsidiary MH Power Systems Europe Service GmbH has been integrated into MHPSE. This close-knit incorporation of the service business means the company can react that much more flexibly and extensively to customer requirements in and around energy and power plants - from revamping through to repairs and from maintenance through to power plant servicing.

MHPSE is also a leading player in the development of novel energy storage technologies including large scale energy storage (e.g. Liquid Air Energy Storage – LAES), Power-to-Fuel" (PtF) technologies and high temperature heat pumps.

Role in the project

MHPSE as original equipment manufacturer and power plant constructor, has broad experience in building combined cycle power plants and in the development of high temperature heat pump technology. In the PUMP-HEAT project MHPSE will:

  • support the analysis of concepts for the integration of heat pumps into CCGT power plants and the effects on the power plant cycle
  • investigate the integration capabilities of MHPSE’s high temperature heat pump technology into CCGT power plant cycles, which may imply some necessary changes in the heat pump design (process design, heat exchanger design)

Members

Mr. Muhammad Majid, PhD: he has been Process Engineer in R&D dept., Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Systems Europe GmbH, since 2013. He held a PhD at the Department of Mechanical Engineering in Technical University of Dortmund (2007-2012) where he also got his M.Sc. in Chemical Engineering at the Department of Biochemical and Chemical Engineering in Technical University of Dortmund. He previously got a B.Sc in Chemical Engineering at the Department of Chemical Engineering in University of Engineering & Technology Lahore in Pakistan.

Mr. Arthur Heberle, PhD: he has a wide experience in managing research projects and he has been Head of Department Innovation & New Products since 2014. He is particularly the responsible for energy storage research, Power-to-Gas/Power-to-Fuel applications, flexibility of power plants and he’s currently Scientific Advisory Board of IUTA/University of Duisburg-Essen. He was Head of Field Data Validation, responsible for process optimization from 2012 to 2014 while he was Project Manager and Head of CO2 technology team at Hitachi Power Europe GmbH (HPE) responsible for Post-Combustion-Carbon-Capture (PCC) projects (2007-2012), for the design, engineering, manufacturing, construction and operation of HPE CO2 pilot plant (treatment of 5000 m3/h flue gas) in cooperation with GDF SUEZ and E.ON, involved in EU project CESAR/CLEO, industrial funded PCC project “Long-term operation and testing at Esbjerg CO2 capture pilot plant” initiated by DONG and “Nitrosamines Emissions Reduction Programme NERP” initiated by TNO, German funded PCC project EU-NRW Programm Ziel2 Hightech.NRW “Einsatz einer mobile Anlage zur CO2-Abtrennung aus Rauchgasen”, responsible for several different commercial studies related to PCC (new and retrofit designs for power plants).

Previously, he has been project Lead Engineer and Project Manager in advanced development/product development for gas filtration, CO2-reduction strategies, vehicle energy management at the automobile industry.

He held a PhD in the fields of thermodynamics and thermal process engineering (former Technical University of Karlsruhe, today KIT) and M.Sc. in Chemical Process Engineering, focus on thermal and mechanical process engineering (former Technical University of Karlsruhe, today KIT)

Sven Härtel: Sven Härtel graduated from the RWTH Aachen University in Mechanical Engineering (M.Sc.; specialization: Energy Engineering / Power Plant Engineering). He works in the R&D department of Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Systems Europe GmbH as process engineer. His work field is in new technologies, e.g. energy storage and heat pumps. He has experience in thermal process calculations, economic calculations and in managing research projects.
