Limmat Scientific AG – LSC

Limmat Scientific is a spin-off of ETH Zurich (CH) and is a world leader in precision and fast-response aerodynamic probe measurement technologies for Power Generation, Aerospace, Automotive, Medical and Process Engineering Industries. Limmat Scientific provides engineering services in the aero-thermal engineering sector, including calibration services for probes, measurement campaigns for new blading and system design consultancy services. Limmat Scientific has access to state of the art experimental turbomachinery facilities for development of both turbine and compressors. Development programs to validate new designs as well as measure component efficiencies can be performed with a high degree of accuracy and customer responsiveness. Limmat Scientific is working on the application of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) in various sectors of Aerothermal Engineering. The company has the capability of performing steady and unsteady 3DNavier-Stokes calculations for turbines and compressors using in-house as well as most of the leading commercial CFD software. LSc improves productivity using cutting edge technology to gain performance.

Role in the project

LSc will contribute to the WP2 and WP6 by leveraging on the significant experience in simulations and measurements of steady and unsteady flow fields in development of innovative technologies and monitoring systems for the measurement of turbomachinery efficiency (i.e. development and application of intelligent aerodynamic probe traversing system for the efficiency optimization, development and integration of optical measurement techniques to quantify the size, speed and concentration of fog and coarse water droplets in low-pressure steam turbine). More specifically, LSc will:

  • contribute to the CFD analysis
  • contribute to the subsequent experimental validation of the laboratory-scale and demonstration scale turbo-expander for two-phase fluids as well as the characterization of fog (water condensation) generated by heat exchanger at the gas turbine intake, used in the PHCC plant


Mr. Michel Mansour, PhD: he is Technical Director at Limmat Scientific AG since 2011, he leads the test and measurement systems engineering group and conduct solution design for advanced measurement systems used in Aerospace, Power Generation and Automotive industries. He received his Diploma Degree in mechanical engineering from EPF Lausanne and holds a PhD degree (2008) from the Laboratory for Energy Conversion at ETH Zurich, where he developed a miniature fast- response entropy probe for aerothermal loss measurements in turbomachines. Following his PhD, he served as a PostDoc and then as Group Leader in instrumentation and diagnostics at ETH Zurich, where he was in charge a multidisciplinary team involved in the development of innovative instrumentation for turbomachinery and wind energy research programs. In addition, he delivered lectures in Energy Systems & Power Engineering and Aerospace Propulsion.

Mr. Ilias Bosdas, PhD: he is Project Engineer at Limmat Scientific AG, he is responsible for the development and deployment of instrumentation and measurement systems used by global leaders in the power generation and aviation industry. He has a strong R&D background in experimental and numerical techniques applied to turbomachinery aerodynamics with PhD and Post Doc positions at the Laboratory for Energy Conversion at ETH Zurich. In 2009, Ilias received his Diploma Degree in Mechanical Engineering from the Aristotle University, Greece, followed by a MSc degree in Aircraft Engines at Cranfield University (UK) in 2010. He holds a PhD degree from the ETH Zurich (2016), where he developed new instrumentation for time resolved flow field and droplet measurements in low-pressure steam turbines.
